Struvite Production from Dairy Processing Waste

چکیده

Food security depends on sustainable phosphorus (P) fertilisers, which at present are mostly supplied from a finite rock phosphate source. Phosphate (PO43−) and ammonium (NH4+) in dairy processing wastewater can be recovered as struvite (Mg + NH4+ PO43− 6H20), nutrient rich mineral for fertiliser application. The objectives of this study were to (1) quantify the effects of, pH, temperature Mg: dosing rates (PO43− NH4+) removal precipitation post anaerobic digested wastewater, (2) co-blend different wastewaters improve reactant stoichiometry optimal recovery removal. (>90%) production (>60%) was achieved across range synthesis conditions, significantly impacted by pH determined response surface modelling. A combination disproportionate molar ratios NH4+, presence calcium apparent mineralisation organic N, resulted co-precipitation hydroxyapatite elevated levels residual aqueous NH4+. In second phase study, successfully precipitated improved (~17%) however, higher concentrations blends greater (up 30%). While desired product formation multiple heterogenous P-rich products (struvite hydroxyapatite) has potential P produce blend with amenity value agricultural systems.

Releasing phosphorus from calcium for struvite fertilizer production from anaerobically digested dairy effluent.

Being a non-renewable resource and a source of potential water pollution, phosphorus could be recovered from animal manure in the form of struvite (MgNH4PO4.6H2O) to be used as a slow-release fertilizer. It was found recently that the majority of phosphorus in anaerobically digested dairy effluent is tied up in a fine suspended calcium-phosphate solid, thus becoming unavailable for struvite for...

Overcoming challenges to struvite recovery from anaerobically digested dairy manure.

Recovering struvite from dairy manure has consistently posed problems for researchers. This study separated solids from anaerobically digested dairy manure using a filtration system. Filtrate was rich in free magnesium (160 to 423 mg/L), ammonium (320 to 1800 mg N/L) and orthophosphate (93 to 332 mg P/L). High concentrations of free calcium (128 to 361 mg/L) and alkalinity (3309 to 6567 mg/L as...

Ammonia removal from anaerobically digested dairy manure by struvite precipitation

Ammonia is one of the most important contaminants impairing the quality of water resources. When this is considered along with the fact that the global demand for nitrogenous fertilizers is in constant rise, the need for recovery as well as removal of nitrogen is well justified. Crystallization of N and P in the form of struvite (MgNH4PO4 6H2O), which is a slow releasing and valuable fertilizer...

Processing Optimization of Production of Hydrolyzed Protein from Orange Seed Waste with Pepsin Enzyme

Background and Objectives: The results of observations and studies over the years have shown that health and nutrition are highly related with each other. Bioactive peptides are defined as hydrolyzed proteins, which have the ability to stimulate the desired activities. In this study, the effect of adding pepsin enzyme on orange seed protein was investigated to obtain the hydrolyzed protein, and...

Bio-ethanol production from wet coffee processing waste in Ethiopia

Large amounts of coffee residues are generated from coffee processing plants in Ethiopia. These residues are toxic and possess serious environmental problems following the direct discharge into the nearby water bodies which cause serious environmental and health problems. This study was aimed to quantify wet coffee processing waste and estimate its bio-ethanol production. The study showed that ...
